How To Color Your Own Hair

Applying hair colorFirst, any coloring should begin with an assessment of the condition of the hair.  Any coloring process should begin with healthy hair.  It is usually better for a professional to determine the hair’s condition.

Color added to damaged hair would have a disastrous effect on the hair, both in how it looks as well as its general healthy condition.  Also, once colored, it may not be an easy task to reverse it.  A professional can assist in choosing hair color.  They can review a hair color chart with you in order to help you with your particular hair color ideas.

You may think that certain celebrity hair colors would be very attractive, however a professional will be able to offer suggestions as to colors that will be complimentary to you.

Whenever possible, go to the salon with any hair color photos you can find that might help your stylist to !understand what you are  most interested in.  This may also help them to decide the type of color that might be best for you - permanent or semi-permanent.

Semi-permanent color is a temporary hair color. It will gradually wash out and is only an option to darken hair. Therefore, brunettes wanting to lighten hair must use permanent hair color.  This must be a consideration if the hair is already chemically treated because semi-permanent hair color is the preferred option for chemically treated hair.

Permanent hair color will not wash out.  It must be covered with another color or must grow out and be trimmed off. Permanent color will give the best coverage to gray hair. It also allows you to lighten hair as well as darken it.  However, if your goal is a natural look, it is always best to stay within 2 shades of your natural color, light or dark.

Bleaching is necessary for people with dark hair that want a blond hair color. In fact, even some red hair colors may be difficult to achieve without first bleaching.  In order for dark hair to be colored shades lighter it must be done in two steps.

The first is to bleach it with peroxide and the second is to color it with the desired color.  This process is extremely stressful on the hair.  This is when a particular hairstyle and color become important. Bleaching is best used on people who choose very short, cropped cuts.

The regular trimming can eliminate any damage done to the hair as a result of bleaching.  Also, a very short cut does not require blow drying and curling.  This type of regular styling would have a very negative results on hair with this much processing.
